One price we could read, and one we could not

Zoho Invoice vs Tally: a free invoicing tool, and a ledger we could not read

An Indian small business asking this question is usually asking it for a reason. Either a freelancer needs an invoice out today and cannot justify any spend at all, or a business that already keeps its books somewhere is deciding whether a full accounting package is worth opening. Those are different purchases. Zoho Invoice publishes its own price, its own limits and its own feature list, and we read all three. Tally publishes nothing we could reach: every URL on its site failed a TLS certificate check, so this page publishes zero Tally figures. We would rather hand you a visibly incomplete column than a balanced-looking table with a Tally number nobody on this page stood behind.

NoxOrigin makes neither of the two products compared here, and that is the honest version of the disclosure. We publish this page and we are a vendor, so we are naming our interest anyway: NoxOrigin appears in this article only as a short, clearly-bounded note at the end, where we say plainly that it is not a general ledger, does not do double-entry bookkeeping, and does not file GST returns. If you are here to choose between an invoicing tool and an accounting package, our product is not a candidate and this page does not treat it as one. Last verified: 4 October 2026. On that date we could read Zoho Invoice’s own India pricing page in full, and every Zoho figure on this page comes from it. We could not read a single Tally page: all five URLs we tried failed a TLS certificate name check. We therefore publish zero Tally figures, including no remembered price and no reseller price. We have run no trial of either product, so nothing here is drawn from hands-on use.

Evidence and method

What we verified, and what does not exist

What we verified

Zoho Invoice, from its own India pricing page at zoho.com/invoice/pricing/, which resolves to zoho.com/in/invoice/pricing/. We read the price claim in the title, the meta description, the hero headline and the FAQ. We read the published limits, the published feature list, the branding statement, the data retention policy, the demo account offer, and the escalation route for a business that outgrows the product.

We also recorded what that page does not say, because an absence is a finding. The term e-invoicing, and the strings e-way bill, GSTR and return filing, each appear zero times in the HTML, and the answer to the page’s own question “Is Zoho Invoice forever free to use?” is not in the served markup.

What we could not verify

Anything at all about Tally. On 4 October 2026 we requested https://www.tally.net.in/, https://tally.net.in/, /pricing/, /buy/ and /sitemap.xml, and all five failed before any HTML was served, with curl exit code 60 and the message “no alternative certificate subject name matches target hostname”, on both the www and the apex hostname. That is a certificate name mismatch. It is not a paywall and it is not a 403.

We did not switch off certificate verification to get around it, because a page read that way is not a page we can honestly cite. The consequence is that the Tally column below carries no numbers and no feature claims of ours, and where a row would need a Tally fact we have written “unverified” rather than filling the cell. Confirm every Tally commercial and capability detail with Tally on their own site or through an authorised dealer.

Dimension by dimension

What each one actually is

These are not the same product at two price points, which is the most important thing on this page. The Zoho column is sourced from Zoho Invoice’s own India page and carries its own words and its own numbers. The Tally column is deliberately blank wherever we would need a Tally fact, because we have none.

DimensionZoho Invoice (verified 4 October 2026)Tally (nothing verifiable, 4 October 2026)
What the vendor says the product isA free GST invoicing product. The page title is “Zoho Invoice is free for all Indian businesses, forever” and the FAQ describes it as “a 100%-free GST invoice software designed to help small business owners, freelancers, and entrepreneurs”.Unverified. We could not load a Tally page, so we publish no description of Tally’s product in Tally’s own words. This is not a claim that Tally lacks a product description; it is a statement about what we could read.
PriceINR 0, stated four ways: the page title, the meta description reading “Pay nothing to send professional invoices”, the hero headline reading “₹0 for Seamless and Reliable Invoicing”, and the FAQ. There is no paid tier price on the page and no upsell price, so there is nothing else to publish. No figure published. Five URLs failed a TLS certificate name check and we will not quote a remembered, derived or reseller price for a real company.
Free tier and its ceilingA free tier that publishes its own limits, which is rare and useful. In Zoho’s own words you can “Add up to two users”, “Create a maximum of three projects” and “Send up to 500 invoices per year”. Invoices also carry “Powered by Zoho Invoice” branding. A business past those numbers is past what this page can describe.Unverified. We publish no limit, no edition name and no user allowance for Tally.
Getting an invoice and a payment outPublished feature list, verbatim: “Create GST-compliant invoices in one click”; “Email invoices or send them via WhatsApp”; “Accept payments via UPI, credit/ debit cards & Net Banking”; “Set up automated payment reminders”; “Personalise invoices to reflect your brand”; “Generate recurring invoices”. It also states you can change the language in which invoices are displayed.Unverified. We publish no Tally capability claim, including none about UPI, payment gateways, WhatsApp, or reminders.
Where it runsStated: “Access Zoho Invoice on Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac.” The page carries download links for Android and for the Mac App Store.Unverified. We publish no statement about where Tally runs.
General ledger, balance sheet, bank reconciliationNot claimed, and the page points the other way. It publishes “Gain insights on sales, receivables, expenses, and more”, which is reporting on activity, and it invites scaling businesses to “reach out to our product experts” for “a more powerful solution”. We publish no double-entry, chart of accounts, trial balance or balance sheet claim for Zoho Invoice.Unverified. It would be very likely that an accounting package has these, and we are still not going to assert it, because we could not read a Tally page to confirm it.
Expenses and timePublished on the feature list: “Track time and record your business expenses.” This is the one row where a small business can see the product reaching slightly past invoicing.Unverified. We publish no Tally claim about expenses or time.
GST, e-invoicing, and filingExactly one claim: “Create GST-compliant invoices in one click”, which is a claim about the format of the invoice it produces. The term e-invoicing, and the strings e-way bill, GSTR and return filing, each appear zero times in the HTML. We publish no e-invoicing and no filing capability for Zoho Invoice.Unverified. Zoho is not the only vendor that would say something here; we simply have no Tally text to quote.
Data retention and account riskPublished and worth reading: “if a user is inactive for over 180 days, their associated data will be deleted in the following 20 days”, with users notified beforehand, and retention is possible by logging back in or creating a data backup. On a free tier, an inactivity deletion is a real operational risk and this page does not pretend otherwise.Unverified. We publish no Tally retention or lock-in statement.
Sales pipeline, CRM, and projectsNot this product, and the page says so by implication. It caps you at “a maximum of three projects”, offers no lead, contact pipeline or opportunity claim, and we publish none.Unverified. We publish no Tally CRM claim.
Maturity and scaleA long-established vendor with a product on four operating systems and a published free tier that states its own limits. We publish no customer count, revenue figure or market share for Zoho, because we verified none.Unverified, and deliberately not asserted. Tally is widely described elsewhere as India’s accounting incumbent, and we are not going to repeat a reputation claim on a page where we could not read a single vendor sentence.
Where Zoho Invoice is the better buy

Invoicing today, at no cost, with the limits written down

If you need to raise a GST invoice this week, email it or send it on WhatsApp, take a UPI, card or net-banking payment, remind the customer automatically, and do it again next month without thinking about it, then Zoho Invoice is the better buy and the price is INR 0. That is a complete job description, and it is the job most small businesses are actually hiring software for.

It is also the better buy because it tells you where it stops. Two users, three projects, five hundred invoices a year: those are Zoho’s own words, published on its own page. A vendor that states its ceiling is letting you plan. You will know exactly when you need to move, and you will know it is a fact rather than a sales call. We would rather recommend a product with a visible wall than one with an invisible one.

And it is the better buy when the deciding factor is risk, because there is no spend to lose. The honest caveats are on the same page: invoices carry “Powered by Zoho Invoice” branding, and if a user is inactive for more than 180 days their data is deleted in the following 20 days unless they log back in. Read those two lines before you decide it is free, and decide what your backup habit will be.

Where Tally is the better buy

The case we are making from general knowledge, clearly labelled

We are about to say something without a source, and we would rather flag it than let it blend into the rest of the page. Everything above came from a vendor page we fetched. This paragraph did not, because we could not fetch any Tally page. Read it as a direction for your research, not as a finding.

With that said: Tally is the product people in this market talk about when they need a ledger rather than an invoice, and if your requirement includes a trial balance, a balance sheet, inventory that has to tie to a stock count, or books that have to survive a chartered accountant, then a free invoicing tool is the wrong category of purchase and no amount of feature-grid reading will fix that. An invoicing product records that you sent a document and that money arrived against it. It does not produce the financial statements an accountant signs off, and Zoho Invoice’s own page points scaling businesses at its product experts rather than pretending the free tier stretches that far.

So the honest recommendation is: if you need the ledger, go and read Tally’s own pricing on Tally’s own site, get the number, and compare it against what a full accounting package is actually going to cost your business over three years including data migration and your accountant’s time. And if you need the invoice, use the free thing. Buying an accounting package to solve a collections problem means paying twice for it.

In India

The India-specific version of this decision

This is an India-only comparison in the useful sense: both products are sold into the same market, and the difference is not a feature gap but a category gap. One of them is an invoicing tool. The other is, as far as general knowledge of this market goes, an accounting package. Price is the easy part to compare here. The hard part is knowing which of those two problems you have.

Zero rupees, and what free actually means at Zoho Invoice

The price is genuinely zero, stated four ways by the vendor, and there is no paid tier on that page to be tempted up to. What free does come with is a defined envelope: two users, three projects, five hundred invoices a year, and a “Powered by Zoho Invoice” mark on the document. That is a straightforward small-business proposition and it is honest about its edges. What it is not is a set of books.

GST: the one claim, and the three that are absent

Zoho Invoice claims GST-compliant invoices in one click, and that is the whole of its GST position on this page. The term e-invoicing, and the strings e-way bill, GSTR and any reference to filing a return, each appear zero times in the HTML we received. We are deliberately not telling you what GST law requires of your business, what your deadlines are, or what format a submission must take. That is your chartered accountant’s conversation and it is the one fee worth paying. But do read the distinction carefully: a product that can produce a GST-compliant invoice is not a product that files your returns, and this page does not claim it is.

The inactivity clause is the one to read twice

Zoho Invoice publishes a data retention policy that deletes the data of a user inactive for more than 180 days, within the following 20 days, after notifying them, and says you can keep the data by logging back in or creating a backup. For a two-person firm where one person is on leave for a long stretch, that is a real operational risk with no purchase to negotiate. It is published, which is more than most vendors do, and it is on the page, so it is here. Build the backup habit or do not use the free tier.

Where the money actually goes wrong

A small business usually reaches for invoicing software because money is late, not because invoices are hard. Those are different problems and only one of them is a software problem. An automated payment reminder and a WhatsApp-delivered invoice are cheap answers to the second. The first is a receivables process, and it needs a person working a queue with an owner and a promised date, which is a different product category again. If the reason you are reading this page is that a customer owes you money, name the real problem before you compare anything, because a ledger will not chase anyone. Read the Khatabook versus Zoho Books comparison for the other Indian ledger-versus-ledger head-to-head, and the Tally versus Zoho Books comparison for the accounting head-to-head, which also publishes no Tally figure for the same reason this page does.

Who should choose which

Match the product to the buyer situation

A freelancer or one-person firm that needs to invoice this week

Zoho Invoice, and the decision is not close. One user sits inside the two-user allowance, three projects is more than a freelancer needs, and five hundred invoices a year is more than a freelancer sends. Recurring invoices, a branded look, WhatsApp delivery, UPI and card payments, and automated reminders, all at INR 0. Go and try it before you think about anything else on this page.

A two or three person firm that has outgrown paper but not its budget

Zoho Invoice, up to its ceiling and no further. Two users, three projects, five hundred invoices. If you sit just past that, the free product is not going to grow with you, and it is better to know that now than to discover it mid-quarter. Read the retention policy at the same time, because two users is exactly the situation where one of them being away for six months is plausible.

A business whose books must survive an accountant, a lender, or a statutory filing

An accounting package, and this is where you should start your research rather than end it. Zoho Invoice is not a ledger: its own published features are invoicing, payments, reminders, recurring invoices, time and expenses, and it points scaling businesses at its product experts. We cannot tell you which Tally edition you need or what it costs, because we could not read a Tally page. Go and read Tally’s own pricing, and take a number back to the comparison.

A business that needs a CRM, a pipeline, and invoices

Neither, and this is the most common wrong answer we see. Zoho Invoice caps you at three projects and makes no lead or pipeline claim, and we publish no such claim for Tally either. If you need a record of who you are chasing and what you quoted them, that is a different product from the one that issues the invoice, and buying a ledger to solve it means paying twice for it. Read the GST billing software versus ERP comparison if the question is genuinely which category of tool you are in.

A business already running Tally or another accounting package

Keep it, and add the free invoicing tool only if you have a specific complaint about how invoices reach customers. It is published as free, publishes its own ceiling, and carries no spend to regret. What we would not do is replace a ledger that works with a tool that cannot produce the statements a lender or an accountant will ask for, and we are not going to tell you the ledger is fine without having read anything about it, so check that part yourself.

A buyer whose only question is the price

Zoho Invoice, INR 0, and note what that means about the rest of the question. You cannot compare two prices here, because one of them does not exist on any page we could read. If your deciding factor is cost, take the free product, use it until you hit two users, three projects, or five hundred invoices a year, and only then go and price the accounting package you will actually need. Deciding earlier than that means paying for depth you do not yet have a use for.

Full disclosure

Where NoxOrigin fits, which is: barely, and not here

We publish this page and we make neither of the two products compared on it. NoxOrigin is not a cheaper alternative to Zoho Invoice, and it is not a cheaper alternative to an accounting package. It is a different category of tool, and the honest thing is to say so in full rather than let a platform price imply we are a candidate.

NoxOrigin has no general ledger. It does not do double-entry bookkeeping, a chart of accounts, a trial balance, or a balance sheet. Bank reconciliation and day-end close are assisted-setup maturity rather than something you switch on. It does not file GST returns, TDS, or any return for you. There is no timesheet record and no payroll module; expenses are Nox-Billings only and purchasing lives in Commerce, both of which are scoped custom deployments. There is no change-request record, no milestone record, no deliverable record, no contract editor and no e-signature, so a scope change is a new quote on the same project. Merge policy is a setup decision: detection flags candidates and a human reviews them, it is never automatic. And an invoice and a payment are different records, with “paid” being a projection of allocations rather than a stored flag.

What our platform plans cost, from our own pricing page, is Starter at INR 800 per month for three users in one workspace, Growth at INR 1,600 for ten users, and Agency at INR 5,000 for twenty-five users across three workspaces, and that is the platform only. We publish those figures here only so you can see that we are not pretending to be a third candidate in this comparison, because a platform price against a free tool and an unread ledger is not a comparison. See the NoxOrigin platform plans in INR if you are curious what the platform is, but for the buying question on this page it is the wrong category.

If somebody has shown you an operating platform as the answer to an invoicing problem, the correct response is to keep the free invoicing tool, keep your chartered accountant, and name the real problem in those words before you compare anything. Read the NoxOrigin versus myBillBook comparison for an India-first billing product compared on published INR plans, and the Vyapar versus Busy GST billing comparison for two established Indian GST billing products compared the same way.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask us first

What does Zoho Invoice cost?

Zero, and it says so four different ways on its own India page. The page title is 'Zoho Invoice is free for all Indian businesses, forever'. Its meta description reads 'Pay nothing to send professional invoices with Zoho Invoice. Sign up for 100%-free GST invoice software and start invoicing your customers in minutes.' Its hero headline is '₹0 for Seamless and Reliable Invoicing', and its FAQ asks 'Is Zoho Invoice free?' and answers 'Absolutely! Zoho Invoice is a 100%-free GST invoice software designed to help small business owners, freelancers, and entrepreneurs with their invoicing process.' We publish no other Zoho Invoice figure because that is the only price on the page. There is no paid tier to compare against, and no upsell price is published.

What are the limits on the free Zoho Invoice tier?

The page publishes them, which is unusual and worth reading carefully. In its own words, using Zoho Invoice you can 'Add up to two users.', 'Create a maximum of three projects.' and 'Send up to 500 invoices per year.' It also states that 'Zoho Invoice includes "Powered by Zoho Invoice" branding to help spread the goodwill and support other growing businesses', that the product is available on Android, iOS, Windows and Mac, and that 'According to our data retention policy, if a user is inactive for over 180 days, their associated data will be deleted in the following 20 days.' Two users, three projects and five hundred invoices a year is a real ceiling, and a firm that crosses it is past the point where this page's free column applies.

What does Tally cost?

This page publishes no Tally figure at all, because we could not read a Tally price to verify it. On 4 October 2026 we requested https://www.tally.net.in/, https://tally.net.in/, https://www.tally.net.in/pricing/, https://www.tally.net.in/buy/ and https://www.tally.net.in/sitemap.xml, and every one of the five failed at the TLS layer before a single byte of HTML was served: curl exit code 60, 'no alternative certificate subject name matches target hostname', on both the www and the apex hostname. That is a certificate name mismatch, not a paywall, not a 403, and not a rate limit. We will not quote a remembered Tally price, we will not derive one from a reseller, and we will not carry a number across from a different vendor's page. Every Tally commercial detail has to be confirmed with Tally on their own site or through an authorised dealer.

Which one should a small Indian business buy?

If your problem is getting an invoice out the door, a payment link in the customer's hand, and a record of what is owed, at no cost, Zoho Invoice is the better buy on the evidence we could read, and it costs nothing to find out: it publishes a free tier, publishes its limits, and offers a demo account. Tally is a different category of product built around accounting rather than invoicing, and we are not going to pretend we read its price list to make that point. The one thing we will say is that if your books have to survive an accountant, a lender or a statutory conversation, a free invoicing tool is not the category of product you are shopping for, and you should not buy one and hope it grows into a ledger.

Does Zoho Invoice file my GST returns or my e-invoices?

We are not going to tell you what the law requires of your business, because that is a conversation with your chartered accountant, not with a marketing page. Here is only what the page says. It states that you can 'Create GST-compliant invoices in one click', which is a claim about the format of the invoice it produces, and it says nothing else about GST anywhere on the page. The term e-invoicing appears zero times, as do e-way bill, GSTR and any reference to filing a return; the only substring matches for e-invoic in the HTML are a CSS class named create-invoice and a link to a free invoice generator. So Zoho Invoice makes a GST-compliant-invoice claim in public, makes no e-invoicing or e-way-bill claim, and makes no return-filing claim. We publish no filing capability for it, and we would put the question to Zoho in writing if statutory submission is a requirement for you.

Is NoxOrigin a cheaper alternative to either of these?

No, and it is not in the same category, which is why it sits in a short note at the end rather than in the comparison. NoxOrigin does not publish a general ledger, so it is not an alternative to an accounting package. It has no double-entry bookkeeping, no chart of accounts, no trial balance and no balance sheet, and it does not file GST returns or any statutory return. Bank reconciliation and day-end close are assisted-setup maturity rather than a self-serve switch. Expense tracking is Nox-Billings only and purchasing lives in Commerce, both of which are scoped custom deployments. Our published platform pricing is Starter at INR 800 per month for three users, Growth at INR 1,600 for ten, and Agency at INR 5,000 for twenty-five users across three workspaces, and that is the platform only. If you are choosing between Zoho Invoice and Tally, that decision does not involve us at all.

What we read, and what we could not

Read on 4 October 2026. One deliberate imbalance runs through this page: every Zoho figure here comes from Zoho Invoice’s own India pricing page, which we read in full, while Tally’s site failed a TLS certificate name check on all five URLs we tried, so this page publishes no Tally figure of any kind. The one place we describe Tally is labelled as general knowledge rather than a finding, because that is what it is. We publish no customer count, market share, or review score for any product, we publish no unverified Zoho capability, and we give no tax or compliance advice anywhere on this page.

Zoho

Zoho Invoice India pricing page, price claims, read 4 October 2026

The page requested was https://www.zoho.com/invoice/pricing/, which resolved to https://www.zoho.com/in/invoice/pricing/. Its title is 'Zoho Invoice is free for all Indian businesses, forever'. Its meta description reads 'Pay nothing to send professional invoices with Zoho Invoice. Sign up for 100%-free GST invoice software and start invoicing your customers in minutes.' Its hero headline reads '₹0 for Seamless and Reliable Invoicing' followed by 'Create professional GST invoices in a few clicks, email them, and get paid quickly using the forever-free invoicing software, Zoho Invoice.' Its FAQ asks 'Is Zoho Invoice free?' and answers 'Absolutely! Zoho Invoice is a 100%-free GST invoice software designed to help small business owners, freelancers, and entrepreneurs with their invoicing process.' The only price figure anywhere in the page is the ₹0 in that headline. No paid tier and no upsell price is published.

Zoho Invoice free-tier limits, published features, and platform statements

The page publishes its own limits in these words: 'Add up to two users.', 'Create a maximum of three projects.' and 'Send up to 500 invoices per year.' It also states 'Zoho Invoice includes "Powered by Zoho Invoice" branding to help spread the goodwill and support other growing businesses', that the data retention policy deletes data of users inactive for over 180 days in the following 20 days with users notified beforehand, and that a demo account exists at 'Zoho Invoice's demo account'. Zoho

What the Zoho Invoice page does not say

Recorded so the gaps are visible rather than filled in. The strings e-invoicing, e-way bill, ewaybill, GSTR and 'return filing' each appear zero times in the HTML we received; the only near-matches for e-invoic are CSS class names such as create-invoices and a link to a free invoice generator. The page therefore makes no e-invoicing claim, no e-way-bill claim and no statutory filing claim. The page asks a customer-facing question, 'Is Zoho Invoice forever free to use?', but the answer to that question is not present in the served HTML, which shows only a 'Loading response' placeholder, so we publish no answer to it. We publish no India-specific tax-exclusion or tax-addition sentence, because the page contains none.

Tally, attempted 4 October 2026, all five URLs failed

Every request failed at the TLS layer before any HTML was served, with curl exit code 60: 'SSL: no alternative certificate subject name matches target hostname'. The URLs attempted were https://www.tally.net.in/, https://tally.net.in/, https://www.tally.net.in/pricing/, https://www.tally.net.in/buy/ and https://www.tally.net.in/sitemap.xml, and the mismatch occurred on both the www and the apex hostname. We did not disable certificate verification to work around it, because a page read with verification disabled is not a page we can honestly cite. This means we publish zero Tally figures on this page, including no remembered price, no reseller price, and no derived figure. It is an absence of readable published pricing, not evidence that Tally has no pricing, and the Tally column below therefore carries capabilities we state as unverified rather than numbers.
